- to apply the key features of effective legal writing to a range of legal texts with a clear awareness of the way in which intercultural differences
and working relationships can influence written communication in a legal context
- to analyse a court judgment at common law and write a well-structured case brief that emphasises
the most important aspects of the relevant case
- to interview a client and produce a summary statement outlining the most important facts of a matter as the basis for further legal research
- to structure and draft advice to client, as well as selected documents for trial purposes

Inhalte/Content:
The purpose of this seminar is to convey to the participants (in a practical, relevant and goal-oriented way) the legal concepts and written communication skills they will need in order to deal with and produce a range of legal documents in English effectively and to the high standard expected in legal practice. This will involve developing an awareness not only of the relevant legal terminology, but also of the structural and linguistic conventions applicable to these documents, and of the practical and intercultural context in which they exist. The participants will also be able to use the skills and strategies they learn during the seminar to improve the quality of any legal writing they may have to produce in English as part of their studies.

Pre- and post-seminar tasks: Participants will have to complete a short written task before the seminar and bring it with them. They will also have to submit a final written assignment shortly after the seminar, which will be corrected and returned to them.
