Semantic technologies make the semantics of information accessible for and useable by computers. This includes simple meta data, which can be found today for example in every picture management software. This also includes complex semantic information that are used in product databases or multimedia information systems to precisely describe the desired data and formulate the "right" queries.

The course gives an overview of essential semantic technologies. Participants will learn important languages, for example RDF and OWL, and the corresponding inference mechanisms, and can use them in applications. The course also introduces efficient methods for persistent storage of semantic information.

The course covers, among others, the following topics:

- Resource Description Framework (RDF)
- Queries with RDF (SPARQL)
- Web Ontology Language (OWL)
- Knowledge representation and inference with OWL
- RDF frameworks and persistent storage
- Linked Data

We recommend a course in databases (such as our local course "Datenbanken und Informationssysteme") and some knowledge in propositional and first-oder logics.

Partitipation in the excercises is optional, but highly recommended.

In the excercises, we will consider important topics of the course in detail. This includes aspects of these topics that are not explicitly discussed during the lectures. We will provide example solutions for some, but not necessarily all, excercises.

The exam will include topics from the lectures and the excercises. Experience shows that successful participation in the exam usually requires

- a thorough understanding of the solutions
