Module content:
With the privatisation and successive introduction of competition and market-orientation, the telecommunications sector has undergone a tremendous change in the last decades. The efforts to establish a sustainable and functioning competitive market in the telecommunications industry that drives innovation are by no means complete. Especially the european-wide expansion of Next-Generation-Networks presents new challenges to the industry. In this module, first the technical, economical and regulatory foundations of the telecommunications industry are introduced. On this basis the current competitive situation of the Internet and telecommunications industry will be analysed. Finally, the economic and regulatory implications of technical advancements and innova-tive business models are discussed and analysed.

This moduls covers, among others, the following topics:
? Economic and societal impact of telecommunications
? Technical foundations (signal transmission, fixed networks, mobile networks)
? Foundations of network economics and regulatory economics
? Regulatory foundations
? One Way Access
? Two Way Access
? Network neutrality

Course objectives:
The aim of this module is to gain a better understanding of the technical, economic and regulatory foundations of the telecommunications industry. Students will be able to analyse and evaluate current challenges and changes in the telecommunications industry. Thus, on the one hand they gain knowledge which is essential for operational practice and strategic positioning in a telecommunications company. On the other hand, students learn the essentials of regulated markets, which qualifies them, e.g., for regulatory authorities or as political consultancies.
