SUMMARY:The economics and governance of the global bioeconomy: the road to sustainable development?
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the inaugural BioEcon Workshop, dedi
cated to exploring the economics and governance of the global bioeconomy.
We invite you to contribute to this significant event by submitting your a
bstracts and joining the BioEcon network.\n\nAbout the Workshop:\n\nThe ci
rcular bioeconomy transition, a transformative process encompassing techno
logical, institutional, and social innovations, aims to (i) foster the rep
lacement of non-renewable resources with renewable biological resources an
d (ii) support the development of entirely new bio-based products and proc
esses. For the Global North, it represents a shift to resource efficiency.
For the Global South, it represents a potential pathway to sustainable de
velopment and industrialization. However, the transition to a bioeconomy a
lso raises concerns about unintended consequences, the distribution of ben
efits, and resource pressures. This workshop aims to create a network of r
esearchers and lay the groundwork for future activities including annual w
orkshops, shared research papers, thematic conference sessions, exchanges,
and special issues in academic journals.\n\nWe invite contributions on a
range of topics related to the bioeconomy, including but not limited to:\n
\nDefinition, measurement, and narratives of the bioeconomy\n\nInnovation
systems and transition management\n\nRegulatory, economic, and information
policy instruments\n\nGovernance of global value chains\n\nModelling path
ways, risks, and scenario analysis\n\nEconomic, social, and environmental
impact assessments\n\nBiodiversity, justice, and marginalized groups\n\nTh
is workshop will facilitate exchanges among potential network members, lay
ing the groundwork for future activities such as the organization of annua
l workshops, shared research papers, special sessions at conferences, juni
or researcher exchanges, and special issues in academic journals.\n\n\n\nW
 hen: October 9, 2024 (12:00 PM) to October 10, 2024 (15:00)\n\nWhere: Univ
ersity of Passau, Passau, Germany\n\nWho: We welcome contributions from ea
rly-career researchers (doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, junio
r scientists). To apply, please submit an abstract (max. 500 words) by Aug
