The Troubles, Good Friday and Brexit
The future of Northern Ireland was a serious concern throughout Brexit and remains, arguably, one of the most dangerous tripwires both for the future of EU-UK relations and the internal societal peace of the UK. The Troubles, a term that summarizes a lengthy and complex conflict over the constitutional status of Northern Ireland, gave way to an uneasy and yet increasingly durable peace with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. Brexit, and with it the emergence of a new external border of the EU, puts this historical achievement at risk. Join Professors Tobias Lock (Jean Monnet Chair at Maynooth) and Jörg Fedtke (Chair of Common Law at Passau) as they discuss the current crisis and future ramifications of Brexit in Northern Ireland. Please register for the event via sylvia.boehm@uni-passau.de. Access details will be circulated on 19 May.
