SUMMARY:Patrick Sakdapolrak, University of Vienna: Moving Beyond Environmental and Climate Determinism: Refocusing the Debate on Habitability
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to attend the lecture series “Habit
ability in Times of Global Crisis” in the winter term 2025/2026. The aim
of the lecture series is to provide an exemplary insight into the diverse
habitability research conducted at various universities around the world
and to present the interdisciplinary approaches of different researchers,
with a particular focus on the social sciences, humanities, and economics
perspectives that complement and expand on the natural sciences. Our first
guest speaker, Prof. Dr. Patrick Sakdapolrack, University of Vienna, will
challenge climate-deterministic approaches that frame habitability and hu
man mobility primarily through climatic thresholds. It advances a multidim
ensional and socially differentiated understanding of habitability, emphas
izing that experiences of living in changing environments are shaped as mu
ch by social relations, translocal connections, and flows of resources and
knowledge as by environmental conditions. The presentation calls for inte
grating social and environmental dimensions to move beyond climate determi
nism and to reframe debates on habitability and migration.
