SUMMARY:Vortrag: "Between Power and Faith: Religious And Church Life Of Eastern Galicia In The Second Half Of The 20th Century" - Nadiia Volik, PhD (5. November 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine has once again made ques
tions of history, memory, and identity particularly important. This lectur
e turns to an earlier period of pressure on Ukrainian religious and cultur
al life: the experience of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church under Sovie
 t rule.\n\nAfter the Lviv Pseudo-Council of 1946, the Soviet authorities o
fficially liquidated the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and incorporated
its structures into the Russian Orthodox Church. Its bishops were arrested
, churches and monasteries were closed, and public Greek Catholic religiou
s life became impossible. Yet the Church did not disappear.\n\nDrawing pri
marily on Ukrainian historiography, archival research, and oral testimonie
s, the lecture explores how Greek Catholic religious life continued underg
round. Particular attention is given to secret Liturgies and sacraments, u
nderground clergy and religious communities, family practices, and the dif
ferent strategies of resistance, adaptation, and compromise used by priest
s and believers.\n\nThe lecture asks a broader question: what happens to r
eligious identity when the institution that normally supports it is offici
ally abolished? This historical experience remains particularly relevant t
oday, as Ukraine once again faces attempts to challenge its history, memor
y, and identity. It reminds us that identity is preserved not only through
institutions, but also through communities, memory, and everyday practice
s.\n\nWe invite you to join the lecture and explore this history of faith,
  survival, memory, and identity together.
