Newsletter from the Welcome Centre
Dear international academics,
Winter has fully arrived in Passau with large amounts of snow. Now is the perfect time to get cozy, enjoy the view out of the window and read a little while sipping some tea or perhaps even Glühwein or punch. Maybe our Newsletter comes just at the right moment?
We hope you enjoy reading it!
Your Welcome Centre Team
Invitation to two Christmas events with the Welcome Centre
To close the year 2023, we cordially invite you and your families to two Christmas events:
Advent is a special time: It is a season of expectant waiting and preparation. Therefore, in many German towns and cities, people visit Christmas Markets. Passau has a beautiful Christkindlsmarkt and offers a daily programme. In a magical atmosphere, you can try delicious treats and steaming Glühwein.
Join us for an afterwork get-together at the Christkindlsmarkt on Wednesday, 6 December. We will meet at 6:00 p.m. in front of the main entrance of the Cathedral (Dom St. Stephan). Your family is welcome to join us, too.
Please register for the Christkindlsmarkt get-together by sending us an email at researchmobility@uni-passau.de by 6 December 2023 by noon.
On 14 December, we will be holding our Christmas party in Club Room 005 ITZ:
For all those who want to get a little creative, we start at 5 p.m. with some handicrafts and decorating. This is also a great activity for children. Afterwards, from around 6 p.m., the event continues with an entertaining Christmas programme and a cosy get-together with Kinderpunsch and Lebkuchen.
Of course, we will also eat together again. We ask you to bring a small tapas-style dish for the buffet, just like at the International Dinner. The room we are in has a small kitchen so we are able to warm up dishes or keep them cold if needed.
Do you play an instrument or like to sing? If so, we would be delighted if you brought it along and enriched the Christmas Party with music.
Do not miss the opportunity to experience German Christmas traditions and join us for the Christmas Party!
Please register for the Christmas Party by sending us an email to researchmobility@uni-passau.de by 11 December 2023.
We are looking forward to seeing you!
Report of our International Dinner
In November, the Welcome Centre hosted another one of its famous International Dinners. It was a great pleasure to welcome all participants, among them some well-known faces and some new. The International Dinner proved again to be a great opportunity to meet fellow researchers and like-minded people in a relaxed atmosphere. Once again, there was a great selection of different dishes from all over the world to try. Many thanks to all participants, as always it was great to spend the evening with you! We hope to see you at one or maybe even at both our Christmas events!

Weltkino (“World Cinema”) – Winter Semester 2023/24
Are you learning a foreign language at the Language Centre and/or are you interested in cinema outside the Hollywood mainstream? Then we would like to inform you of the events of the Weltkinoklub: On Thursdays, films from various countries will be shown in their original languages in Nikolakloster.
The main aim is to show short movies in their original version with English or German subtitles. The original languages of the films are largely languages that are taught at the Language Centre of the University of Passau, although other languages are not excluded. The event is designed for anybody who is interested in cultural works outside of what mainstream Hollywood has to offer. Furthermore, it is also a great opportunity for language learners to not only practice their language skills but to also gain insight into the language’s respective cultural area. There is a special focus on women's and queer cinema, and diversity in every form is emphasised.
Admission is free.
