Construction status of the University's photovoltaic systems
As announced in the last ClimUP newsletter, the construction of the photovoltaic systems on campus has begun. The photo shows the building at Leopoldstraße 4.
The University is expanding its photovoltaic systems using funds from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts in the future. Currently, individual university-owned buildings outside the campus are being equipped with PV modules. The construction work is expected to be completed by mid-March but is highly dependent on the weather.

What the University does
Klimateller - Project for the automated climate balancing of dishes in the cafeteria
The KlimaTeller project in the cafeteria, conducted by NAHhaft e. V., enables STWNO, along with 19 other participating student unions, to automatically calculate the carbon footprint of their dishes. The cafeteria displays, similar to the image (excerpt from the cafeteria plan of the Studierendenwerk Berlin), indicate the CO2 emissions generated in the production process using a traffic light system. This approach ensures transparent communication of the carbon footprint of all meals and facilitates the choice of climate-friendly dishes for cafeteria guests. The project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with particularly climate-friendly dishes being labeled as "KlimaTeller."
For more information about the project in the cafeteria, visit the STWNO website [DE].
Solarthermal system on the ZB building
The thermal solar system on the roof of the ZB building was comprehensively renewed, expanded, and optimized last year. This system provides hot water for the cafeteria, essential for food preparation. In particular, the use of electric cassette heaters, previously responsible for heating hot water in the summer, is significantly reduced. The operating technology anticipates an energy saving of 35 MWh or 6,000 euros per year. Additionally, thesystem reduces electricity usage and promotes the use of renewable heat energy.
What you can do
It's getting warmer and sunnier, marking the start of garden and balcony season. If you want to design your garden in an environmentally friendly way this year, you can learn more on the NABU website [DE].
Here are some tips:
- Let the lawn grow into a meadow instead of mowing it weekly: saves effort and helps the environment.
- Use regional seed mixtures from local sources for wildflower meadows to increase local biodiversity.
- Arrange flower beds to bloom all summer, pleasing both the eye and the bees.
- To protect water resources and your wallet, use mulch and rainwater.
- You can often find garden tools made from recycled plastic or available for rent at the hardware store.
