The International Office has set up an accommodation service for international students. We have a number of rooms available in our halls of residence, as well as several private flats which are available for rent to exchange students. Some are within walking distance to the university, others are more conveniently reached by bike, bus or car, but always in less than thirty minutes.
Rooms can also be rented from other students under a sub-tenancy agreement. Many students share a flat with other students, as shared student flats are available at a reasonable cost. If you are on the lookout for accommodation in the private market you may want to read the classifieds in the local newspapers (Passauer Neue Presse, Passauer Woche) or do a search on the different housing websites given below.
Halls of residence
The International Office can arrange accommodation for you for one semester or a full academic year. Rooms in our halls of residence cost about €200 up to €400 per month and are fully furnished. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are usually shared, although some rooms have en-suite bathroom facilities. Bed sheets and duvets are provided at all halls of residence, with the exception of Dr.-Hans-Kapfinger-Strasse and Schönleitnerweg halls. However, you will need to provide your own cutlery, crockery and towels. In addition to your rent, you will need to pay €18 per month (at the time of writing) for your television licence.
Please note that your rent is charged for full months; no pro-rata refunds or discounts are given for periods in which you do not occupy your room, e.g. if you arrive later in the month or move out before the end of the month. Once you have accepted a room offered to you, you are obliged to pay the rent. Under no circumstances does the University pay your rent, whether or not you occupy your room.
The minimum period of lease for a room in the halls of residence is five months.
Free housing market
A room on the free housing market, on average, costs in the vicinity of €200 to €400 a month. Landlords usually require a two- or three-month deposit when you move in, which will be returned to you at the end of the rental period, provided you leave your accommodation in good condition.
If the room is obtained through an estate agent, they usually charge a commission of one or two months’ rent. We recommend that you check very carefully what costs are involved in renting and how much notice you have to give to terminate the lease.
Please complete the application form, print it out, sign it and send a scanned copy by e-mail to Alexandra.Winterkornuni-passau.de or send it by post to the International Office. The closing deadlines for applying for accommodation are:
- 15 December for the following summer semester (March/April to August)
- 15 June for the following winter semester (September/October to February)
