Introduction of compulsory multi-factor authentication (MFA)

To further strengthen the University’s IT security, multi-factor authentication (MFA) will be gradually introduced over the course of this year.

MFA significantly enhances the protection of your accounts, as it requires an additional factor (e.g. app confirmation) when logging into any services and systems.

The ZIM is getting the University’s systems ready so that students and staff should be able to set up MFA themselves starting in November 2025.

It is recommended that you activate MFA as soon as it becomes available. Whilst this will be voluntary for a transitional period, MFA will become compulsory in 2026.

The following authentication methods will be available:

Authenticator app (e.g. Microsoft Authenticator or similar apps)
SMS-TAN procedure as an additional option
Windows Hello for Business (e.g. login with PIN or biometric features)
Security key (e.g. YubiKey): this will only be available to staff, not students
