The Language Centre’s service-learning project Vision Dindefelo – Praxiskurs Senegal has been nominated for the German Engagement Award presented by Deutsche Stiftung für Engagement und Ehrenamt (German Foundation for Civic Engagement and Volunteering). This umbrella award pools the winning entries of many civic engagement awards – in our case, the kuwi.netzwerk volunteering award.
What have we achieved in eight years? Here’s the short version:
- Over 250 annual scholarships for university studies in Senegal. These young people – all from very humble backgrounds – are now returning home as trained teachers, IT specialists or nurses and are playing their part in the further development of the region.
- A vocational school offering three training programmes and a North-South climate partnership between the districts of Passau and Kédougou (solar power systems, drip irrigation).
- A service-learning course for Passau students.
The programme thus actively contributes to several Sustainability Development Goals in the United Nations 2030 Agenda: SDG 01 “No Poverty”, SDG 04 “Quality Education”, SDG 05 “Gender Equality” and SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals”.
