EUREGIO Project: students sound out local government cooperation in the border region

Local government decisions are in a process of change and challenging municipalities close to the border in particular. Students from the universities of Passau and Budweis discussed the opportunities and risks of cross-border cooperation as part of a EUREGIO project in the Bavarian municipality of Haidmühle on the border to the Czech Republic.

As part of the EUREGIO project “Local government cooperation in the border region. A German-Czech encounter”, both universities invited students of the relevant subjects to participate in a joint block seminar held in the Bavarian-Bohemian border town of Haidmühle in May 2019. “The seminar was intended to discuss ideas for facilitating successful cross-border cooperation,” explained project manager Prof. Dr. Winand Gellner, holder of the Chair of Political Science at the University of Passau.

“Alongside the academic exchange between students, we attached particular importance to the acquisition of empirical competence,” added Karl Matschiner, lecturer at the Passau Chair of Political Science and press officer for the district of Freyung-Grafenau. Matschiner conducted the seminar together with Dr. Ing. Mirka Kubatova-Pitrova from the University of South Bohemia (České Budějovice). On excursions to Stozec, Haidmühle and Freyung, the students engaged in discussions with representatives of municipal politics.

Participants and funding

Prof. Dr. Winand Gellner, holder of the Chair of Political Science at the University of Passau conducted the project. The University of South Bohemia (České Budějovice) was also involved. “EUREGIO Bayerischer Wald – Böhmerwald – Unterer Inn” funded the project within the framework of the “Objective ETZ Free State of Bavaria – Czech Republic 2014 – 2020” programme.
