We are an international network of researchers dedicated to understanding the economic dimensions of the global bioeconomy. Our key activities include an annual workshop (hosted on a rotating basis), preparation of special session contributions at conferences and the facilitation of research exchanges among partners.
About the Workshop:
The circular bioeconomy transition, a transformative process encompassing technological, institutional, and social innovations, aims to (i) foster the replacement of non-renewable resources with renewable biological resources and (ii) support the development of entirely new bio-based products and processes. For the Global North, it represents a shift to resource efficiency. For the Global South, it represents a potential pathway to sustainable development and industrialization. However, the transition to a bioeconomy also raises concerns about unintended consequences, the distribution of benefits, and resource pressures. This workshop aims to create a network of researchers and lay the groundwork for future activities including annual workshops, shared research papers, thematic conference sessions, exchanges, and special issues in academic journals.
We invite contributions on a range of topics related to the bioeconomy, including but not limited to:
This workshop facilitates exchanges among potential network members, laying the groundwork for future activities such as the organization of annual workshops, shared research papers, special sessions at conferences, junior researcher exchanges, and special issues in academic journals.
Following the success of the first Bioeconomy Workshop organized by the Bioeconomy Economics Research Group at the University of Passau, Germany, we are pleased to invite you to the 2nd Bioeconomy Workshop: Towards an Inclusive Bioeconomy, to be held in Prague.
This edition is hosted by the Team for Forest Bioeconomy at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), in collaboration with the IACGB Bioeconomy Youth Champions. The aim is to broaden participation and enrich the dialogue surrounding the bioeconomy.
While the first workshop focused on the social sciences and the economic governance of the global bioeconomy, this second edition aims to foster a more inclusive space for dialogue and collaboration among key stakeholders from multiple sectors.
The event will bring together participants from academia, industry, policymaking, and civil society to discuss achievements, share experiences, and explore opportunities for advancing the transition towards a sustainable and inclusive bioeconomy.
The main objective is to strengthen networks, support joint initiatives, and promote knowledge exchange to address the challenges and opportunities of building a more equitable and resilient bioeconomy.
On October 9-10, 2024, the Bioeconomy Economics research group welcomed scholars to the 1st Bioeconomy Economics Workshop: Economics and Governance of the Global Bioeconomy. In total, there were 19 presentations and 13 scholars representing research from Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Uganda.
