China's super app - challenges of regulating a comprehensive digital ecosystem
It is our great pleasure to invite you to our interdisciplinary and joint DAAD / DFG lecture by and with Prof. Normann Witzleb and Wan Li from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
In China, nearly the whole population is connected through WeChat. This super app has comprehensive functionality. It combines messaging, social networking, news feeds, search engine system with e-commerce and mobile payment services. The infrastructure provides fundamental utilities to individuals, business entities and governmental authorities, but it also creates unique interdependencies and collects a huge amount of personal and non-personal data. This talk will explain the idiosyncratic nature of the comprehensive digital ecosystem fostered by the super app and analyse the specific business and political context of China. It will also introduce the general attitudes towards the digital platforms by Chinese users, the Chinese government and regulators, and outline the regulatory trends in China.
