Let's Talk! Racism in the U.S. – Student Discussion Group
The recent protests in the wake of the death of George Floyd have shown once again the deep racial divide in the U.S. and posed many questions. How come that the category race and subsequently racism is so deeply embedded in U.S. society that it affects your life chances from crip to cradle? The color of your skin determines where you live, which school you attend, the job you’ll gain, and subsequently, your income, whether you spend some time in prison, you become a victim of police brutality, you fear deportation, or you can afford housing in the suburbs. Race is like an invisible guide that determines also how we think of other people, which information we process, or the judgments we often make.
At the department of American Studies, we seek to establish a discussion group to explore, cultivate dialogue, listen, and learn more about race and racism in the U.S. Our group is for students and open to anyone who would like to join in discussions, book readings, film screenings, etc. We provide an open and safe space to exchange ideas & experiences and connect with other people. In our first meeting, we will determine together topics and subjects to discuss and investigate throughout the following semester. Primary language spoken will be English, but don’t hesitate to join us if you think your English is not sufficient enough.
We are looking forward to seeing you every second Wednesday. For the time being, we will meet online, but we also plan for meetings in person.
So, join in and let’s talk!
