You Can't Erase History: The Battle over the Confederacy's Place in American Public Culture of Remembrance
Not just since the violent death of George Floyd have the symbols commemorating the Confederacy been a subject of interpretive struggle. Many do not want to live with these icons, which seem to glorify a past of slavery, racism, and white supremacy. Others defend statues, flags, and honorific namings by citing historical heritage and warn against erasing history. This talk explores the ongoing debate, provides historical background on the lost cause myth and its significance for the public memory of the Confederacy, and considers the relationship between history and those forms of remembrance.
Guest lecture by Dr. Jonas Anderson (Historisches Institut, BWU München)
