FAQ Application M.Sc. Computer Science

Application process

Please use our personalised, interactive guide to find out how to apply.

The decisive factor for the application process is not your nationality, but the country in which you obtained your relevant university degree.

Please use the websites of the degree programmes to find detailed information about each programme and the entry requirements:

Your application will only be processed if it is complete.

If you have not provided the required documents by the end of the application period, you will automatically receive a rejection notification.

Application period for the winter semester:

  • 15 April - 31 May (direct applications)
  • 1 April - 31 May (applications via uni-assist)

Application period for the summer semester:

  • 1 November - 15 December (for all applicants)

Please use the interactive application guide to find out how to apply.

The University of Passau does not use uni-assist’s VPD documentation as admission criteria.

The APS ('Akademische Prüfstelle') exists in China, Vietnam and India. For these countries, the APS certificate is a mandatory requirement for applying to a German university.

The APS is a joint institution of the German Embassy and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It checks the authenticity of educational biographies and the corresponding educational certificates, and issues certificates if the result is positive.

Yes. If you are still enrolled in the final semester of your undergraduate programme and cannot yet provide your final degree certificate at the time of application, you may apply by submitting the transcript of records available so far.

If you are successful in your application, you must then submit...

  • ... your final transcript of records with all courses until the first day of lectures and
  • ... your degree certificate within 10 weeks after the first day of lectures.

All other required documents for the application (e.g. English language certificate, abstract of the Bachelor‘s thesis etc.) must be submitted by the application deadline.

The application process depends on your situation:

  • If you are not yet enrolled and undecided between two Master's programmes: You may apply to only one Master’s programmes of the Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics at the same time. Please review the programme profiles and entry requirements carefully and choose the most suitable programme before applying. However, it is possible to apply for two Master's programmes offered by different faculties of the University of Passau.
  • If you are currently enrolled in one of our Master's programmes and you wish to change your degree programme, study two Master's programmes at the same time, or start a second Master's after completing the first one: You must submit a new application within the regular application deadline. In these cases, you may apply via the Campus Portal instead of uni-assist. Please contact the Student Registration Office for details on the procedure.

We do not have a specific date by which results will be released. We will inform students of their results via the Campus Portal, as soon as individual decisions have been made. As we are dealing with a high volume of applications, it may take a while to get back to every applicant. You will be contacted as soon as a decision has been made. Please refrain from requests regarding your application status.

Entry requirements

In order to qualify, your previous degree needs to be comprised of significant amounts of computer science and/or mathematics content.

Credit requirements for our three Master's degree programmes

M.Sc. Artificial Intelligence Engineering M.Sc. Computer Science M.Sc. Mathematics

a computer science/mathematics component of at least 120 ECTS credits; out of these 120 ECTS credits:

  • at least 35 ECTS credits must have been earned in mathematics modules/courses, including theoretical computer science
  • at least 40 ECTS credits must have been earned in computer science modules/courses
a computer science component of at least 110 ECTS credits a mathematics component of at least 90 ECTS credits

If your Bachelor's degree does not meet these requirements, you will not be admitted to the Master's programme.

The minimum grade requirement is 2.7 on the German grading scale.

If you do not fulfill the grade requirement, you can still get admission if you submit a ranking document that places you in the top 70% of your cohort. The ranking document must state the total number of graduates within your cohort (students who graduated at the same time as you from the same programme) and your rank among them (i.e. 40/120) and be issued by your university.

The Admission Board can consider modules that you are going to study according to your study plan during your last semester. Make sure to share relevant documents with your application.

No, we do not do any pre-screening of applications. We will check the credit requirements once you have applied, and only if your application is otherwise complete (e.g. abstract of your Bachelor's thesis and English language proof have been submitted).

Feel free to share additional transcripts, e.g. from a Master’s programme to check for the Admission Board. Please be aware that modules required for your admission may not be transferred to the University of Passau later on.

Bachelor's thesis

If you obtained your undergraduate degree outside Germany, the university must verify that your degree included at least 10 ECTS credits from an independent academic project in the field of computer science or a closely related discipline. This project must demonstrate independent study using scientific methods, compliance with set deadlines, and the submission of written academic findings. The Bachelor’s thesis, final year project, or equivalent academic work serves as formal evidence that these requirements were met.

You must submit an English or German-language abstract/summary of your undergraduate Bachelor’s thesis, dissertation, or final year project (should including a link to the full paper).

If your degree programme did not include a formal thesis, you may submit an academic research paper or publication that demonstrates your ability to independently solve a scientific research problem. It is strongly recommended to include a hyperlink to the complete original-language text of the submitted work.

English language skills

Unless English was the language of instruction (MOI) for your prior university education, you should provide an English language certificate at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), such as:

  • TOEFL (567 paper-based, 87 internet-based, ITP 543 ‘silver’ or better)
  • IELTS (score 5.5)
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment at level ‘Advanced’ (CAE) or ‘Proficiency’ (CPE)

or an equivalent. A first degree or secondary education completed exclusively in English (MOI) also counts as proof of English-language proficiency.

If English was the MOI (Medium of Instruction) in your previous degree, we accept that as sufficient proof of English language skills and you do not have to provide another certificate (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL). The fact that English was the MOI needs to be stated on your transcripts, your degree certificate, a letter from your university, or a similar official document. Prior studies can only be considered as a proof of language skills, if the MOI was 100% in English.

Yes, the certificate of English language proficiency must be provided at the time of application.

Postponement of admission

To postpone your admission to the next semester for important reasons, e.g. delays in the visa process, you need to inform the Student Registration Office before enrolling in the degree programme.

For the next semester, you will have to apply again, yet through a simplified process in the Campus Portal. You will receive detailed information after requesting the deferral.
