Semester contribution
How much does enrolling at the university cost?
You have to pay a small semester contribution ("Semesterbeitrag" in German) at the start of each semester. This must be paid when you enrol for the first time, or re-register to continue your studies.
For winter semester 2023/24, the fee is 104 euros. Of this, 72 euros go to the Student Services Association (Studentenwerk), which operate the refectory, cafeterias and halls of residence, among other things. The remaining 32 euros pay for the semester bus pass that is included with your CampusCard (student ID card) and that permits you to use the buses in town at no extra cost until the valid-to date printed on your card.
Please don't forget to validate your campus card at the start of each semester, before you use it on any buses.
Why do I have to fund the Student Services Association / Student Union
All students in Germany have to pay a contribution towards their Student Services Association / Student Union. This is used, among other things, for subsidising the refectory, for childcare services, social services for students, cultural facilities and more.
This contribution has to be paid at enrolment / re-registration by all students. The University of Passau transfers the fee in its entirety to the Studentenwerk Niederbayern/Oberpfalz.
Should you change your mind and de-register from your programme before the semester officially starts, you can obtain a refund of this contribution fee.

The University of Passau is a state university, which means it is fully funded by the government of Bavaria. As a result, students do not have to pay for tuition at the University of Passau.
