Students have the opportunity to spend a year at a foreign school working as a foreign language assistant and teaching German. In addition to studying or doing an internship abroad, this is an excellent opportunity—especially (but not only) for teacher-training students—to pass on their knowledge of their native language to pupils in another country while at the same time getting to know the language, culture, and education system of that country.
The program is administered by the Pädagogische Austauschdienst (PAD) of the Kultusministerkonferenz. It is based on bilateral agreements between governments, which currently exist with Australia, Belgium, China, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Switzerland, Spain, and the United States.
In the PAD’s experience reports on Instagram, foreign language assistants talk about their time abroad.
The program is primarily aimed at student teachers who can demonstrate foreign language proficiency in Chinese, English, French, Italian, or Spanish.
During their time abroad, foreign language assistants receive a monthly stipend from the authorities in the host country, which covers living expenses. Travel costs usually have to be paid by the participants themselves.
All information about the application procedure and application deadlines can be found on the PAD website.
The main contact person for the Foreign Language Assistant Program in Passau is Jens Pollak (passau@fsa-pad.de). However, in general all students can contact any campus ambassador for initial information and may attend all information sessions—regardless of their university location.
Profiles and contact details of all campus ambassadors are provided by the PAD.
As an alternative to the PAD, the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD) also offers opportunities and scholarships to gain teaching experience abroad.
