The Passau University Orchestra invites you to its end-of-semester concerts on 21 and 22 July, starting 7:30 p.m., in the parish church of St. Peter in Passau. Under the direction of Eleni Papakyriakou, the orchestra presents Schubert's Third Symphony, Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition".
The Third Symphony is one of Schubert's early works, written when he was only 18 years old. In keeping with the summer, the symphony is a cheerful work with humorous themes and lively rhythms.
Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" is certainly known to a wider audience through the Disney film adaptation "Fantasia", in which Mickey Mouse embodies the apprentice who
sends a broom to fetch water, with unintended consequences. Dukas sets the enchanted broom, the swelling water and the apprentice's increasing desperation to music in rhythmically and melodically memorable melodies that remain in the ear for a long time.
Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is a setting of an exhibition of artworks by a deceased friend. With the help of richly varied timbres, the work gives the impression that the audience is itself viewing the exhibition. The audience encounters, among other things, a limping gnome, a ballet of merry chicks, a hysterical mess in a marketplace and the majestic Kyiv Gate.
Tickets can be bought as of 10 July for €9/€18 in the foyer of the university refectory (weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), at Big Dandy (Nibelungenplatz 1 in Passau), or at the box office for €10/€20.
