Erasmus+ new generation programme
The Erasmus+ Programme supports the objectives of the European education agendas, promotes the modernisation, internationalisation and quality improvement of higher education in Europe, enhances the attractiveness of the EU as a place to study and research, and contributes to the sustainable development of higher education in third countries. It also strengthens, in particular, the international competences, personal development and employability of students.
A new 7-year programme generation will start in 2021. Among other things, the focus will be increasingly on digitalisation, sustainability and inclusion.
The implementation of the Erasmus+ programme is to be strongly digitalised and considerably simplified for participants. This is to be implemented primarily through an initiative for a European student ID card and a revised IT architecture.
As part of this, new funding opportunities such as "Blended Mobility" and "Blended Intensive Programmes" are also to be introduced to enable previously under- and unrepresented target groups to gain experience abroad.
- "Blended Mobility": combination of physical (5-30 days) and virtual mobility
- "Blended Intensive Programmes": short physical group mobility (5-30 days) abroad combined with a virtual phase of undefined duration.
The Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) initiative aims to make university administration digital. In the future, the exchange of documents and data between universities will no longer take place on paper, but digitally via interfaces. This includes, for example, the digital exchange of learning agreements.
Other projects and initiatives:
- European Student Card
- Extension of existing student ID cards for the use of university facilities (e.g. refectory, library) without additional ID card on site
- Erasmus+ App
- Organisation of the entire Erasmus+ mobility for students
- Organisational information, language learning programmes (OLS), on-site events, communication tool
The Erasmus+ Programme aims to become greener and more sustainable, contributing to the EU's climate goals under the Green Deal. This includes the following:
- Raise awareness ofErasmus+ participants on the issues of sustainability, climate change, environmental protection and especially on the environmental footprint of a mobility.
- Implementation by:
- Raising awareness for sustainability and the environment
- Financial incentives
- Promote green skills (competences that are important for living in a sustainable and resource-efficient society and economy) through increased cooperation projects on green issues.
- Goals:
- Increased use of environmentally friendly means of transport for mobility
- Reducing the environmental footprint of the Erasmus+ Programme
Sustainability in the Erasmus+ Programme is based on two dimensions:
- Ecological footprint of the programme
- Contribution of the programme to social change towards a sustainable world
These dimensions will be addressed in the 2021-2027 programme generation through the following focal points:
- green mobility / sustainable travel
- Raising awareness of the issues of sustainability, the environment and climate change
- Cooperation projects on 'green' topics
- Use of the instruments of digital transformation

By promoting social participation and equal opportunities in the Erasmus+ programme, participation should become attractive for those who have so far refrained from it for social reasons. Erasmus+ aims to enable people of different ages and cultural, social and economic backgrounds to undertake learning stays across Europe, in order to promote the confirmed, positive effects of stays abroad.
The intended target groups, currently underrepresented, include:
- People with a disability or chronic illness
- Students with children
- First-time graduates (often in combination with a migration background)
- Students who have to support themselves from their own resources and other socio-economic reasons
- People with individually or systemically limited access or other social barriers
- Students from certain subject groups
On a financial level, special funding will be extended from persons with a degree of disability (GdB 20 and above) to persons with chronic illnesses from the start of the project 2021.
