Science Slam Diversity
This is how diverse research is in Passau! At our Science Slam Diversity, we want to showcase the Diversity of research at our University.
Science Slam 2024
For the second time, we will be showcasing the great Diversity of research at our University with our Science Slam Diversity as part of the German Diversity Day.
So be there when the following slammers compete for fame, honour and your favour with their outstanding contributions on 28 May 2024 at 6 pm in ITZ 017:
- PD Dr. Jörg Sternagel: "The Praxis of Diversity" - Presents different understandings of what diversity work should be and considers recent debates on inclusion
- Mirela Zagrean: "Multiple nationalities?" - The lecture will present her Master's thesis on the topic of nationalities, including the question "Do we only have one nationality or is there also a superordinate European nationality?"
- Dr. Florian Wobser: "Petromasculinity - Opportunities and risks of an ecological thesis" - The seductive thesis of "petromasculinity" (according to Cara New Daggett 2018) will be briefly placed in the ecofeminist discourse in the lecture and examined for opportunities and risks with regard to our political present.
- Daniela Polzer: "Fairytale Images of Women - the changing Roles of Women in the Disney-Universe" - Is the Ariel of 1989 the same as the Ariel of 2023? Has Cinderella evolved from a cartoon to a feature film? The lecture is based on her doctoral research, which focusses on narrative strategies in fairy tales and the continuation of the stories in the Disney universe. The slam contribution will take a look at Disney's world of remakes and in particular at the female roles conceived in the films.
- Dr Jonathan Rose: "The Principle of Hope and Queer Futurity: A look at current Debates on Trans* with Ernst Bloch and José Esteban Muñoz" - The lecture addresses the topic of trans*. Trans* is a perennial hot topic in the media and causes controversial and heated debates on social media. In politics, too, gender identities beyond the binary gender are repeatedly on the agenda. For example, the proposed Self-Determination Act, which is intended to replace the so-called and largely unconstitutional Transsexuals Act from the 1980s, has politicians talking about the danger of trans*-people in public saunas, while Bavaria and Hesse are banning 'gender language' in the public sector.
- Dr Martina Maletzky de García and Barbara Bauersachs: "All You Can Do" as a tool for mutual integration - The "All You Can Do"-programme will be presented together with Barbara Bauersachs (International Support Services) and its suitability for cultural diversity management will be examined in an entertaining way using scientific criteria.
- Lea Zillgit:"Feminism in International Law" - A feminist analysis of international law in terms of systemic disadvantage, or inequality, of women, as well as a special focus on the "double effect" of human rights on women. The lecture will be based on findings from her seminar work focussing on international law.
- Dr. Vanessa Vollmann: "Of Barbies and Intersectional Butterflies" - The lecture deals with the question of the power of cultural scripts such as Greta Gerwig's 2023 Barbie, which question unjust structures such as patriarchy, but at the same time serve dominant stereotypes. It questions the extent to which marginalised voices are left out, whether they are radical enough or need to maintain their non-threatening nature in order to effect change.
The Science Slam will be opened by Vice President for International Affairs and Diversity Prof. Dr. Christina Hansen and moderated by Katrina Jordan.
Please register via Stud.IP under 62306. There is also the possibility of childcare by our pedagogical expert Daniela Leirich. You can register for this on the Family Service website.

We look forward to many participants and a fantastic evening with you!
A science slam offers the unique opportunity to present your own research area or project to the audience in a lively and entertaining way within a short space of time. Creativity in the presentation is expressly encouraged - because science can also be fun!
All participants will have 8 minutes to present their research topic and, above all, to convince the audience.
Science Slam Diversity 2023
At the Science Slam Diversity on the Diversity Day 2023, four slammers presented their research to the Passau audience in just 10 minutes.
With her contribution "Codeversum - Discover the Universe", Daniela Polzer gave insights into an exciting project that teaches schoolchildren about programming in a playful way.
Prof. Dr. Karsten Fitz gave an impression of US-American culture and the myth of the "level-playing field" with "The American Dream as a 'method' of structural discrimination?!".
Hanna Augustin focused directly on the University of Passau by comparing our University's guideline with other German universities in her contribution "Guidelines for gender-equitable language at German universities or: Does the University of Passau need a new gender guideline?".
Prof. Dr. Susanne Hartwig's contribution showed with "Leading roles! People with 'mental' disabilities on stage and screen" how diverse media their representations can be in film and theatre.
Many thanks for the great insights and the entertaining and creative introduction to these topics!
We also thank the bookstore Pustet and Mymuesli for sponsoring the prizes.
