Studienkolleg

If your school or higher education qualifications are not recognised as higher education entrance qualifications in Germany, the University of Passau may direct you to the Studienkolleg in Munich. There, you will sit an entrance test, complete a one-year preparatory course and take the assessment examination.

The Studienkolleg in Munich requires German language proficiency at a minimum level of B2 within the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Without German language skills, you will not be able to enroll at the Studienkolleg.

Process

  1. Use the uni-assist university entrance check to determine whether you are eligible for a Studienkolleg placement.
  2. If eligible, apply for an undergraduate programme of your choice at the University of Passau.
  3. Upon successful application, you will receive a nomination letter (Zuweisungsschreiben) from the University of Passau for the Studienkolleg in Munich.
  4. With the nomination letter, you can register for the entrance exam (Aufnahmeprüfung) of the Studienkolleg.
  5. If you pass the Studienkolleg entrance exam, you can enrol there.
  6. After approximately one year of study at the Studienkolleg, you can take the university qualification assessment exam (Feststellungsprüfung).
  7. Upon passing the Feststellungsprüfung, you can then enrol at the University of Passau and join your desired degree programme.

Typical timeline of a preparatory course at the Studienkolleg

Apply to the University of Passau November-January April-July

The first step is to apply for a place on an undergraduate programme at the University of Passau. You'll have to apply through uni-assist for the programme of your choice.

Referral to the Studienkolleg January August

If your qualifications meet certain criteria, the University will refer you to the Studienkolleg in Munich for the preparatory course.

Studienkolleg entrance exam February September You'll have to pass an entrance exam at the Studienkolleg.
Enrolment at the Studienkolleg February September Once you've passed the entrance exam, you can enrol at the Studienkolleg for the preparatory course.
Attending the preparatory course at the Studienkolleg

The course will prepare you for studying at a German university.
University qualification assessment exam (Feststellungsprüfung) May / June December / January

The Feststellungs­prüfung exam is the end of your preparatory course. If you pass the exam, you'll get a qualification you can use to enrol at the University of Passau on the programme you had originally applied for.

Enrolling at the University of Passau Winter semester (October) Summer semester (April) With the certificate from the Studienkolleg, you can enrol directly at the University of Passau - no need to apply via uni-assist, as it is a German qualification.
