CHE Ranking 2022: University's Romance Studies department at gets top ranking

The latest ranking of the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), published on 3 May 2022, provides very gratifying results for the University of Passau. Romance Studies at the University of Passau received a rating "in the Germany-wide leading group" in the categories "support of students at the start of their studies" and "courses offered". The CHE takes a close look at different specific academic disciplines every three years. This time, the disciplines under examination included linguistics and cultural studies – and Passau's Romance Studies was chosen for the University this year.

The other disciplines covered in this ranking, but not from the University of Passau, were engineering and psychology. For the first time, students were also asked about the use of digital teaching methods. In addition to students' feedback, the CHE also uses other sources to compile its information about teaching and research.

The Romance Studies department at the University achieved several top rankings in this updated survey setting. Students gave good marks for the area of "range of courses offered" in general and specifically for the "opportunities for individual subject specialisation" (mark: 1.5). The University also ranked highly in the "quality of language tuition" category.

The extensive support services at the start of studies (student advice, tutorials, mentoring, courses to acquire study-relevant skills etc.) and the "availability of rooms" scored well above average in the CHE ranking. Students were particularly satisfied with the general study conditions and the technical equipment.

Professor Bettina Noltenius, Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Ethics, was very pleased with the good rating: "Although Romance Studies is not one of the faculty's largest subjects in terms of student numbers, it certainly plays a profile-forming role for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities due to its inclusion in the very popular, interdisciplinary European Studies and International Cultural and Business Studies degree programmes, as well as in our teacher education programmes." Professor Lucia Krämer, Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, added: "This is a great success for my colleagues in Romance Studies, who have adopted a continuous-improvement approach to make sure that the study of Spanish and French languages, cultures and literatures are always attractive for our students." The department representatives, Professors Hartwig, Hertrampf and Reutner, agreed: "Romance Studies in Passau clearly stands out from Romance Studies at other German higher education institutions – thanks to the interdisciplinary linkages, our strong orientation on cultural studies and the familiar atmosphere."

The CHE rankings are the most comprehensive and detailed higher education rankings for the German-speaking world, surveying around 120,000 students and examining more than 300 universities and other higher education institutions.

The CHE results were published on 3 May in this year's ZEIT University Guide 2022/23. The complete CHE University Ranking can be accessed online at https://ranking.zeit.de.
