The excavation pit for the multimedia lecture theatre is already clearly visible. It will be an important part of the MedizinCampus Niederbayern (MCN) and the centrepiece of the future Centre for Digital Medical Education (ZeDiMA), where digital teaching formats can be conducted as part of the medical degree programme at the Passau site.
At the unveiling of the foundation stone on Wednesday afternoon, speeches were given by University President Prof. Dr Ulrich Bartosch, Rudolf Ramelsberger as representative of the building owners, Mayor Andreas Rother and Dr Rolf-Dieter Jungk, Head of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts, who attended in place of Minister of Science Markus Blume.
'I am extremely pleased that today we are once again taking a special step together in the realisation of the MedizinCampus Niederbayern project: the laying of the foundation stone for the multimedia lecture theatre. The technical equipment of this lecture theatre will enable us to impart knowledge, skills and experience in an entirely new way during the course of study. Furthermore, together with the University of Regensburg and our partner universities in Deggendorf and Landshut, we aim to set a particular focus in medical education at the University of Passau: the digitalisation of medicine, which will also be a key factor for our region, where, for example, diagnostics over distances must be realised in a short time,' said University President Prof. Dr Ulrich Bartosch.
In his speech, Head of Office Dr Rolf-Dieter Jungk underscored the innovative power of the project. Minister of Science Markus Blume emphasised in advance: 'The laying of the foundation stone for the new multimedia lecture theatre makes the rapid progress truly tangible: we are creating 600 medical study places in Lower Bavaria at record speed. The campus model is pioneering: we are fully exploiting the opportunities of digitalisation, combining the best of the analogue and digital worlds, and enabling students to access courses regardless of location and time. Our motto for medical training at the MCN: modern and mobile, top-notch and smart, in the region for the region!'
'The MedizinCampus Niederbayern is a milestone for the city of Passau. I am very pleased that with today's foundation stone laying for the multimedia lecture theatre we are taking another step towards realising the necessary infrastructure. Many thanks are due to everyone involved,' said Mayor Andreas Rother.
Rudolf Ramelsberger, representative of the building owners, Hedika Vermögensverwaltungs-GmbH and the Zuchtverband für Fleckvieh in Niederbayern, highlighted in his address the significance of the university expansion for the economic development of the city: 'Here, regional capital, which is invested in regional banks, is being reinvested in the region. The project thus makes a valuable contribution to infrastructure and regional development. Furthermore, I would like to draw attention to the importance of international cooperation in the construction of such projects: without the qualified workers from the construction company, who come from all over Europe, nothing would have been possible on the construction site for a long time.'
Following the unveiling of the foundation stone, Prof. Dr Tomas Sauer from the University of Passau gave a live demonstration of what virtual anatomy can look like thanks to the multimedia concept.
The first medical students are expected in Passau from the winter semester 2027/28.
