GEMA licences: 20% discount, but you must register the music yourself

Anyone who plays music in public in Germany – for example, at end-of-semester parties and concerts, but also as part of university projects – needs a licence from the copyright collecting society GEMA; university students and staff are not exempt from this obligation.

| Reading time: 1 min.

Thanks to a master agreement concluded between the German Rectors’ Conference and GEMA, members of the University of Passau are entitled to a 20 percent discount on the standard rates.

Important: Even with the master agreement, you must still register separately.

A use that is subject to GEMA fees occurs when music is performed in public. To obtain the rights for this, you must register for the music in advance via the GEMA website or at their customer centre. For the discount to be applied, you must indicate at the time of registration that the University of Passau participates in the master agreement (Gesamtvertrag) with the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz). As before, the costs will be borne by the respective organisational units.
