In the current GreenMetric Ranking, the University of Passau occupies position 231 out of a total of 1,745 higher education institutions and can thus hold its own in a top group that has grown by almost twenty percent. As last year, this "green ranking" table is led by Wageningen University in the Netherlands. University College Cork (Ireland) has moved up to second place, while Nottingham Trent University (UK) is now in third place. The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld (Trier University of Applied Sciences) was ranked highest from Germany.

"The University of Passau's recent excellent position in the GreenMetric Ranking underlines the sustainable course that the University has been pursuing since 2020 – with the goal that was also formulated in the recently adopted University-wide sustainability strategy: We want to lead the way as an institution and partner in terms of a comprehensive understanding of sustainability", emphasises Professor Werner Gamerith, Vice President for Sustainability and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Passau.

Set up as a non-profit initiative, the GreenMetric Ranking has been compiled annually by the University of Indonesia since 2010. It tracks a comprehensive range of sustainability activities and parameters of higher education institutions. Specifically, the following six categories are examined: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation and Education.
