The international conference "Spoliation, Damage, and the Ecological History of Paper" explores the cultural and ecological history of damaged books and manuscripts from the early modern period to the present. The focus lies on both institutional practices of collecting, cataloging, and archiving, as well as everyday book-related actions that have shaped the material afterlife of these texts. At the same time, the conference examines how writers and antiquarians understand the deterioration of these works as part of a broader textual ecology, in which destruction does not solely signify loss but can also be regarded as a valuable trace of human and non-human interactions.
