Dr. Maria Mashirma Fungomeli is a Senior Research Scientist at the National Museums of Kenya and Manager and Senior Curator of the Mombasa Butterfly House. During her stay at the Chair of Physical Geography with a focus on Human–Environment Research, she will collaborate with Prof. Dr. Christine Schmitt on a project examining plant diversity patterns in the coastal forests of Kenya. The project aims to better understand biodiversity patterns and to develop strategies for the long-term conservation of these ecologically valuable ecosystems.
Prof. Dr. Angela Cristiane Santos Póvoa from the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná in Brazil will conduct her research at the University of Passau in collaboration with Dr. Terese Venus in the Bioeconomy Economics research group. Her project explores how so-called “nudges” – subtle behavioural incentives – can encourage consumers to make more sustainable choices. The study focuses in particular on the acceptance of innovative materials such as fish-skin leather, which is considered a more sustainable alternative to conventional materials.
With their diverse academic backgrounds and research perspectives, both fellows contribute to the international and interdisciplinary exchange fostered by PICAIS. The centre is delighted to welcome Dr. Fungomeli and Prof. Dr. Santos Póvoa to Passau and looks forward to their contributions during their research stays.
