As part of the Lower-Bavarian Medical Campus (MCN), a new medical degree programme is to be established under the leadership of the University of Regensburg in cooperation with the University of Passau and Lower-Bavarian hospitals. The first students were admitted to the Lower Bavaria Medicine degree programme in winter semester 2024–25.
The University of Passau is contributing to the curricular training of medical students and is responsible for the provision of digital medical teaching content, which will be of particular importance due to the regional distribution of students across different locations.
A total of six new chairs will be established at the University of Passau to realise the teaching tasks, including
Starting in winter semester 2027–28, the University will contribute to teaching in the subjects of occupational medicine, social medicine, health economics, health systems, public health, epidemiology, medical biometry and medical informatics, history, theory and ethics of medicine, as well as prevention and health promotion. Teaching will be offered to all MCN students, i.e. also to those who are studying in the clinical part of the programme at other hospital locations. The University of Passau is also participating in the ProWiss semester.
With its research profile, particularly in the field of digitalisation, the University of Passau will contribute to the shaping the profile of the medical campus. The University will thus expand its offerings for students beyond the usual curriculum in the field of digitalisation, enabling students to learn about future-oriented topics of digitalisation in medicine beyond traditional medical training during their studies and to immerse themselves in the subject.
The University of Passau is establishing the Centre for Digital Medical Education (ZeDiMA) which will be the central hub for digital teaching in the MCN. ZeDiMA will develop material on medical teaching content and prepares it for distance learning. This will make centrally offered teaching equally accessible to students at all locations. ZeDiMA will support teaching staff at the locations with qualified personnel in the creation of digital teaching formats and videos, for example. The centrepiece of the ZeDiMA in Passau will be the multimedia lecture hall, which enables 3D projections of teaching content.
The Institute of Health Sciences (IGW-Passau) was founded as a matrix structure across all faculties of the University in order to work on interdisciplinary issues closely related to the topic of medicine & health. It is also planned that, in addition to professorships at the University of Passau, individual professorships at Deggendorf Institute of Technology and Landshut University of Applied Sciences will also be able to participate in IGW-Passau. In this way, the IGW-Passau will act as a cross-university (type) platform for Lower Bavaria. In addition to the six new MCN professorships, other professorships at the University – from all existing faculties – will participate in the qualification of students in the MCN via the IGW-Passau.
