English as an admission requirement for degree programmes at the University of Passau

English language proficiency at level B2 CEFR is an admission requirement for numerous degree programmes at the University of Passau. As part of your application, you must upload proof of your language proficiency to the relevant application portal (Campus Portal or uni-assist). The proof of language proficiency must be submitted by the application deadline at the latest.

You can demonstrate your language proficiency either with an official language certificate that is no more than two years old at the time of application, or by other means. If you have any questions about application and admission, please contact the Student Registration Office (Studierendensekretariat).

Proof of language proficiency

  • School-leaving certificates from Germany (Abitur) or Austria (Matura)
The Abitur or Matura certificate must explicitly state English proficiency at level B2 CEFR or higher. This allows English language proficiency at level B2 CEFR to be evidenced (valid indefinitely as proof).
  • English as the medium of instruction (MOI)
    • You have completed your first higher education degree entirely in English. This is recognised as proof of English proficiency if it is explicitly noted in your transcripts by your higher education institution or officially confirmed.
    • A secondary-school education completed entirely in English is only recognised as proof of English proficiency if English is an officially recognised official and educational language in your country.
  • Language courses completed at the Language Centre of the University of Passau
    • FFA advanced level (Aufbaustufe) successfully completed (with a grade of at least "sufficient"): level B2 CEFR
    • FFA main level 1 (Hauptstufe 1) successfully completed (with a grade of at least "sufficient"): level C1 CEFR
  • Study abroad semester completed in English
If several subject-specific academic courses have been passed in English, this may be used to evidence English language proficiency. This is subject to individual case-by-case assessment by the Student Registration Office (Studierendensekretariat).

Further forms of proof may be accepted as part of the application process (e.g. school-leaving certificates from other countries, language courses at other German universities). Please contact the Student Registration Office to have your certificate assessed.
