In the new 2024 GreenMetric Ranking, the University takes 216th place out of a total of 1,477 and has held old its own in a field of participants that has grown by 25 percent. As last year, this “green ranking” table is led by Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Nottingham Trent University (UK) remained in second place, and the University of Groningen (also the Netherlands) rose to third place. Among the participating German universities, Passau remains in third place. Leading the field in Germany is the Birkenfeld Environmental Campus of Trier University of Applied Sciences.
“Our excellent position in the GreenMetric Ranking once again underscores the sustainable development path that the university has been on since 2020. A diverse, networked team is now working on a variety of projects aimed at continuously improving the sustainability balance sheet”, said Professor Werner Gamerith, Vice President for Sustainability and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Passau. “This year, for example, we expect to begin the large-scale deployment of photovoltaics systems on various buildings on our campus. We will also be launching a new master's degree programme in sustainability.”
Set up as a non-profit initiative, the University of Indonesia has been conducting the GreenMetric Ranking annually since 2010. It tracks a comprehensive range of sustainability activities and parameters of international universities and other higher education institutions. Specifically, the following six categories are examined: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education.
