Joint Study Programme leading to the issuance of a double degree

The University of Passau offers the opportunity to apply for the English-taught, German-Czech Joint Study Programme (Double Master) in cooperation with the Charles University in Prague as part of the Master's degree programme in Computer Science.

Computer Science – Software and Data Engineering is a two-year Master's joint programme with the common curriculum taught jointly at Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics by the members of its School of Computer Science and at the University of Passau, Faculty of Computer Science and Mathematics.

Graduates of this programme have acquired knowledge of software engineering, software development, Web engineering, database systems and Big Data processing, allowing them to work in a wide variety of fields of computer science in an international environment. The study programme aims at expertise in the analysis, design and development of complex software solutions and systems focused on Big Data processing. The portfolio of courses provided covers several technological platforms, from classic, web-based to modern cloud and distributed solutions.

After successfully completing the Joint Study Programme, students receive two Master's degree certificates from both partner universities, which refer to each other. At the University of Passau, students graduate with an M.Sc. in Computer Science. At the Charles University in Prague, they graduate with the Magistr (Mgr.) Computer Science – Software and Data Engineering.

With this Master's degree you are qualified to take up IT-related executive positions or undertake independent research, e.g. as part of your doctoral study, laying the foundation for a career in academia.

Programme details

The Joint Study Programme usually begins in the winter semester. Students spend the first and second semesters at their home university. They complete the third and fourth semesters at the partner university.

The programme consists of 120 ECTS credits. These are divided into compulsory modules and compulsory elective modules as well as the Master's thesis. At least 30 ECTS credits must be earned at each university. The Joint Study Programme leading to the issuance of a double degree is successfully completed by passing a final oral examination.

Within the Master’s programme in Computer Science at the University of Passau, you may choose from the following two specialisations:

  • Programming and Software Systems (ProgSoft)
    The Programming and Software Systems (ProgSoft) subject area imparts modern methods for constructing large-scale software systems as well as creating and using software authoring, analysis and optimisation tools. You will also consolidate your knowledge of various programming paradigms and languages; moreover, you will explore the structure of language processing systems and learn to deal with parallelism in program routines.
  • Information and Communication Systems (InfComm)
    In the module group Information and Communication Systems (InfComm), you will study the interactions of the classic computer-science subjects of information systems and computer networks. This specialisation presents an answer to the problem of increasing volume and complexity of worldwide information distribution and networks, and for the growing requirements on quality and performance of computer communication. You will also learn how to transfer database results to multimedia data.

You can write your Master's thesis either at the University of Passau or at Charles University, Prague. The thesis is written in English under the joint supervision of both partners.

Application and selection process at the University of Passau

To enrol on the Joint Study Programme, you'll have to go through two stages:

  1. Apply for the regular M.Sc. Computer Science programme and enrol. When you put together your timetable and sign up for courses, ensure they are aligned with the requirements of the Joint Study Programme.
  2. Once you are enrolled on the Computer Science programme, you can apply to take part in the Joint Study Programme.

As the selection process for the Joint Study Programme takes into account the results you achieve in your first semester, the deadline for applications is in spring.

  • Letter of motivation
  • Confirmation of periods of study (Studienverlaufsbescheinigung)
  • Degree certificate from your first degree
  • Transcript of records (for your current Master's programme)

Applicants may be invited for interviews as part of the selection process. Participants are selected based on their prior academic performance and their motivation to participate in the programme, taking into account special achievements arising from the candidate's curriculum vitae.

Five students can participate per year. Successful applicants are selected and informed by mid-May.

Enrolment

The University of Passau transmits the data of successful applicants to Charles University. The selected students must then also enrol at Charles University Prague.
