Frequently Asked Questions on the application for M.Sc. Information Systems

Application process

Please use our personalised, interactive guide to find out how to apply.

The decisive factor for the application process is not your nationality, but the country in which you obtained your relevant university degree.

  • Applicants who obtained their degree in an EEA country can apply via the University of Passau's campus portal.
  • Applicants who obtained their degree in a country outside the EEA must apply via uni-assist.

We cannot make any exceptions.

Your application will only be processed if it is complete.

If you have not provided the required documents by the end of the application period, you will automatically receive a rejection notification.

Credit requirements

The credit requirements are quite flexible, as you can substitute credits in information systems with credits in management, economics, business administration or computer science. In many cases, a clear distinction between credits earned in information systems and management, on the one hand, and information systems and computer science, on the other hand, is not needed. In the extreme, you do not even need any credits in information systems at all (see table below).

Seminar papers and your bachelor's dissertation also count towards those credits if they are in any of the relevant subject areas.

Here are some examples of ECTS credits that would suffice to meet the requirements:

Information Systems Management Computer Science
20 40 0
0 20 40
0 40 20
20 20 20
10 10 40
30 30 0
0 30 30

Typical courses in information systems:

IT management, business process management, knowledge management, data and information management, internet business and eCommerce

Typical courses in computer science:

Programming, computer networks, data bases, algorithms and data structures, IT security, or software engineering

Typical courses in management, economics or business administration:

Finance, accounting, organisation, human resource management, innovation management, marketing, supply chain management, micro ecnomics or macro economics

Introductory courses in mathematics and statistics do not count towards any of the relevant categories. Advanced or more specialised courses, such as data analytics, computer logic or operations research may be considered, however.

No, you have to meet the credit requirements by the application deadline.

If you have only credits in management, economics and business administration – without at least 20 ECTS credits in courses that are more technical and can be counted towards information systems or computer science, you do not meet the credit requirements.

In this case, you can still apply for the M.Sc. Business Administration.

If you have only credits in computer science, without at least 20 ECTS credits in courses that can be counted towards management or information systems, you do not meet the requirements.

In this case, you may still be able to apply for the M.Sc. Computer Science or M.Sc. Artificial Intelligence Engineering.

No, we do not do any pre-screening of applications. We will check the credit requirements once you have applied, and only if your application is otherwise complete (e.g. GMAT scores and English language proof have been submitted).

GMAT

Yes. If you are required to submit a GMAT test score, your score must be submitted by the application deadline. Your application will not be processed if you have not submitted a GMAT score.

No, you do not need to submit a GMAT score when applying.

Your nationality is irrelevant. What matters is in which country you have obtained your relevant bachelor’s degree.

If you have obtained your bachelor’s degree in the European Union/a member state of the Lisbon Convention, you do not need to submit a GMAT score.

Applicants who have not obtained their prior university degree in a signatory state to the Lisbon Convention must additionally submit a Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) test result with a score of at least 600 points (10th Edition) or 565 points (Focus Edition). This test result must be available at the time of application.

This depends on whether you have obtained your bachelor’s degree in a country that is a signatory state of the Lisbon Convention. This also includes several states outside of the European Union, such as all 46 member states of the Council of Europe (which includes, e.g., Türkiye, UK or Switzerland), and others such as Australia, Canada, Israel and Kazakhstan.

You only need to submit your GMAT score at the time of application if your degree was obtained in a country that does not belong to the signatory states of the Lisbon Convention, e.g. India, Nigeria, Pakistan or Tunesia.

English language skills

You need a recognised language certificate in English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

If English was the language of instruction of your first degree, you do not need to submit an English certificate. However, you need to provide a certificate confirming English being the language of instruction.

Alternatively, proof of English language skills can e.g. be provided by:

  • For a bachelor's degree from the University of Passau: completed FFA advanced level of English with a minimum grade of 4 (sufficient).
  • School leaving certificates from the European Union explicitly stating that the English language level achieved is B2 CEFR (or higher).
  • School leaving certificates from the European Union that prove that English was taught for at least 8 years up to the qualification that entitles the holder to enter higher education. The final grade, or the average grade for the last two years, must be at least a German grade of 4 (sufficient) or 5 points.

Yes, the certificate of English language proficiency must be provided at the time of application. Please see the Language requirements for master's programmes web page to find our which certificates we recognise.
