Student residences in Passau

• The four student halls are:
  • Bräugasse: 95 accommodations, 3 with their own bathroom and kitchenette, 74 accommodations with their own bathroom and shared kitchen, 7 two person and one four person accommodation
  • Donau-Schwaben-Straße: 242 rooms, arranged into two-, three- and eight-room flats that share bathrooms and kitchens. 
  • Leonhard-Paminger-Straße: 254 rooms. Each room has its own ensuite bathroom, but kitchens are shared.
  • Maierhofstraße: one studio flat, five rooms with ensuite bathrooms and access to shared kitchens, and 14 rooms arranged into flats that share bathrooms and kitchens.
• Rooms are fully furnished. 
• Internet access and utility costs (heating, electricity, water) are included in the price. 
• In the winter semester, there is more demand for student hall rooms than there are rooms available. Please apply early.
• Unless specified otherwise, the rent is charged in six monthly instalments per semester. The rent costs between 260 and 550 Euros per month, depending on the room.
• For exchange students, the tenancy agreements are slightly different:
  • Bed sheets and duvets are provided for exchange students.
  • The rent is charged in five monthly instalments per semester. The cost per instalment is adjusted accordingly, so that the total rent paid over the semester is the same.
  • A number of rooms have been set aside exclusively for exchange students, as there are fewer alternative options in Passau for those seeking accommodation for less than 12 months. 

If you plan to study in Passau and want to live in student halls, we recommend that you do not wait for the confirmation of your place of study before you apply for a room in halls. You do not enter into any contractual obligations by applying for a room: your application only becomes binding if you accept a room that has been offered to you.

If you apply for a room in halls, but sign a contract for alternative accommodation before you receive a response, please get in touch to withdraw your application.

• Degree-seeking students: Please apply online via the Studentenwerk website. There is no fixed application deadline, but you are recommended to apply early.
• Exchange students: Please contact the Accommodation Service for Exchange Students to apply for a room. There are two application deadlines:
  • 15 December for the following summer semester (March/April to August)
  • 15 June for the following winter semester (September/October to February)

The Catholic Church's 'Wohnbauwerk' runs two student halls of residence in central and outer Passau, the 'Marienheim' in the city centre and Haus St. Severin at Schönleitnerweg. Together, these two compounds comprise 169 one-bedroom flats and 29 two-bedroom flats.

What you need to know:

• The rent costs between 200 and 550 Euro per month
• Rooms are fully furnished. 
• Utility costs (heating, electricity, water) are included in the price. 
• The rooms have internet connections, but tenants must sign a separate contract with a broadband supplier to use these.
• Bedding (mattress, pillows, duvets) is not included.
• A number of rooms in Haus St Severin have been set aside for international and exchange students. Exchange students are given priority when these rooms are allocated.

How to apply for a room:

• All students can apply directly to the Wohnbauwerk, which operates a waiting list. See their website for the Wohnbauwerk application form.
• International & exchange students: the International Student Accommodation Office administers the allocation of a number of rooms in Haus St Severin. The application deadlines for these rooms are:
  • 15 December for the following summer semester (March/April to August)
  • 15 June for the following winter semester (September/October to February)

The Studentenwohnheim St Nicola (commonly known as Kapfinger Wohnheim) is operated by Vegis Immobilien.

What you need to know:

• The halls consist of 201 single rooms and 8 double apartments.
• As of April 2022, the rent costs 349 Euro (for single rooms) or 698 Euro (for both rooms in the double apartments).
• Rooms are fully furnished
• Bedding (mattress, pillows, duvets) is not included.
• Each room includes a kitchenette and an ensuite wet room (shower, sink,  WC)
• Internet and utility costs are included in the rent

How to apply:

• All students can apply directly to Vegis.
• International & exchange students: the International Student Accommodation Office administers the allocation of a number of rooms in these halls. The application deadlines for these rooms are:
  • 15 December for the following summer semester (March/April to August)

River Living is a student hall complex built in 2022, comprising of 155 furnished apartments. There are 30 government subisidised apartments available, which feature a reduced monthly rent. These apartments, two of which are wheelchar accessible, can only be rented to international students and students receiving Bafög funding. The student hall can be found in Spitalhofstraße 30, 94032 Passau, about 800m from the town centre and 1.2km from the University campus. There is a bus stop outside the building. The UNILIFE Passau halls of residence, run by ZS Wohnbau GmbH, comprises of 36 individual rooms and 9 shared two-person flats. The complex is situated approximately 800 metres from the University and is close to the bus and railway stations. The Hamberg dormitory was formerly a monastery and has been expanded and converted into a student housing complex for 250 residents. Rents cost between 246 and 405 euros per month (total rent for a one-room apartment), or 438 - 521 euros total rent for a two-room apartment (furnished for one person). Electricity, heating and water costs are included in the rent, as well as car parking space and gym use. Internet access must be contracted separately (from 20,50 €/per month).

Kloster Hamberg is situated across the border, in Austria. Therefore, please only rent a room there if you are a citizen of an EU country. If you need a visa or residence permit to study in Germany, this does not cover living in Austria, as Austria has separate immigration rules.

Located across the river Inn, this small student hall has 19 apartments.

Studentenwohnheim Straßl is situated across the border, in Austria. Therefore, please only rent a room there if you are a citizen of an EU country. If you need a visa to study in Germany, this does not cover living in Austria, as Austria has separate immigration rules.

Donau Treuhand manages several student halls complexes in Passau. Even though they are part of integrated building complexes, many of the apartments are owned by individual landlords. Therefore, there are differences: some are furnished, others aren't. Tenancy agreements and contract clauses vary. Some require parents to sign the contracts on behalf of students.
