We are particularly saddened and disappointed that this situation was caused by a student from Texas A&M, who disseminated hateful messages on social media, in light of the fact that we have enjoyed many years of academic collaboration with this partner university, not only in the context of the Summer Academy. At our University, we value and promote dialogue in the spirit of science. However, when the personality rights of individuals are violated and they are subjected to racist abuse in conversations, on public forums or on social media, this is wholly incompatible with the University’s values as an open and inclusive institution committed to opposing xenophobia, and will not be tolerated.
“We see the diversity of our university members as an enrichment and a source of strength. Understanding and fostering diversity requires openness, safety, respect and equity. The derogatory remarks made by our American guests towards our esteemed colleague Dr Vanessa Vollmann as well as other staff and students are a clear violation of the University's core values”, said Professor Christina Hansen, Vice President for International Affairs and Diversity. “Ensuring that the members of our University feel welcome and safe on our campus at all times is our top priority.”
The incident was reported to the University’s anti-discrimination officer and has since been addressed through dialogue among the academic staff at the University of Passau. Furthermore, the organisers of the Summer Academy are in communication with Texas A&M University regarding possible consequences for those responsible. “In response to this incident, we are reviewing how we can further develop a Code of Conduct for our University, which would then also apply to future collaboration within the framework of the Summer Academy”, said Professor Lars Rensmann (Chair of Political Science), adding that the option to terminate the collaboration with the Texan partner university is being kept under consideration.
