Health insurance certificate for enrolment purposes
Before the University can proceed with enrolling you on a degree programme, it needs confirmation that you have sufficient health insurance coverage.
While this is done electronically, you still have to request proof of insurance status from a statutory health insurance provider in Germany. Your insurance provider will determine whether you have sufficient health insurance coverage from the beginning of the semester (or the day of enrolment) and, if you are insured, confirm your insured status electronically to the University.
This means that even if you are insured at a German private-sector insurance company or at an insurance company abroad, your insurance status must be checked and confirmed by a statutory health insurer in Germany before you can proceed with enrolment.
Which health insurance provider is responsible for sending the confirmation?
The health insurance provider who will be sending the confirmation is either:
- the insurance provider you're currently insured by or who will be insuring you during your studies
- the insurance provider that made the determination that you are exempt from compulsory health insurance (because your private/foreign health insurance provides enough coverage)
If you are an international student, you can find more details on health insurance on the International Office webpages.
