Frequently Asked Questions on the application for M.A. International Education and Global Learning

Application process

The programme begins in April (summer semester).

The application period runs from 1 November to 15 January (for all applicants).

Please use our personalised, interactive guide to find out how to apply.

The decisive factor for the application process is not your nationality, but the country in which you obtained your relevant university degree.

  • Applicants who obtained their degree in an EEA country can apply via the University of Passau's campus portal.
  • Applicants who obtained their degree in a country outside the EEA must apply via uni-assist.

Please use our personalised, interactive guide to find out how to apply and which documents you need.

Typical required documents include (depending on your prior education):

  • certified copy of your degree certificate,
  • transcripts of records,
  • a CV,
  • proof of required ECTS credits in education/social sciences,
  • proof of international experience,
  • English proficiency at B2 level,

and – if applicable – certified translations.

Requirements/Eligibility

To be eligible for this master’s programme, you need:

  • A first undergraduate university degree (Bachelor, Diplom, etc.) with a minimum final grade of 2.5 (or equivalent). If your grade is slightly weaker, you can still apply if you were among the top 50% of your graduation cohort, as certified by your previous institution.
  • Proof of at least 30 ECTS credits credits from educational or social science courses
  • Evidence of relevant international experience in education or social sciences: either at least 6 weeks abroad (e.g., internship, work, university-related exchange) or at least 10 ECTS credits from courses with an international dimension.
  • Proof of English language skills at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR), unless English is your native language or the language of instruction in your previous education.

You can apply with any type of undergraduate degree; it does not have to be in education or social sciences.

Depending on the scope of your degree, you will fall into one of three categories:

  • 240 ECTS credits degree (4-year degree): you are directly eligible for admission.
  • 180 ECTS credits degree (3-year degree): you must provide additional 60 ECTS credits or 1 year of relevant practical experience in the field of education or social sciences.
  • 210 ECTS credits degree (3,5-year degree): you must provide additional 30 ECTS credits or 6 months of relevant practical experience in the field of education or social sciences.

You can estimate the ECTS equivalence based on the standard duration of your undergraduate programme:

  • 4-year degree -> usually equivalent to 240 ECTS credits
  • 3,5-year degree -> usually equivalent to 210 ECTS credits
  • 3-year degree -> usually equivalent to 180 ECTS credits

You may submit any extra academic courses you have completed at a university – whether graded or ungraded – as long as these credits were not part of your original degree programme. You may also use internships or practical experiences that were not counted toward your degree requirements.

The key point is that the credits or experiences must be additional, meaning they were completed outside your degree programme.

Yes. You do not need a degree in educational or social sciences to apply. However, you must demonstrate 30 ECTS credits in these fields. If you haven’t earned these credits through your degree, we can also convert relevant work experience or internships (they don’t have to be part of your prior degree) into ECTS credits to meet the 30 ECTS credit-requirement.

Yes. Applicants must demonstrate relevant international experience in education or social sciences. This can be fulfilled in one of three ways:

  • Practical international experience: at least 6 weeks (e.g., internships, work, or voluntary service) abroad in an educational or social-scicence context.
  • Academic international experience: at least 10 ECTS credits from university courses with an international focus.
  • "Internationalization at home": professional experience in organizations or projects with an international dimension, even if based in your home country.

In exceptional cases, applicants who have not yet completed their first degree may still be admitted to the Master’s programme. The degree must be completed within 10 weeks after the start of the programme. However, the transcript of records must already show a grade of 2.5 or better.

English language skills

You need a recognised language certificate in English at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

If English was the language of instruction of your first degree, you do not need to submit an English certificate. However, you need to provide a certificate confirming English being the language of instruction.

Alternatively, proof of English language skills can e.g. be provided by:

  • For a bachelor's degree from the University of Passau: completed FFA advanced level of English with a minimum grade of 4 (sufficient).
  • School leaving certificates from the European Union explicitly stating that the English language level achieved is B2 CEFR (or higher).
  • School leaving certificates from the European Union that prove that English was taught for at least 8 years up to the qualification that entitles the holder to enter higher education. The final grade, or the average grade for the last two years, must be at least a German grade of 4 (sufficient) or 5 points.

Yes, the certificate of English language proficiency must be provided at the time of application. Please see the Language requirements for master's programmes web page to find our which certificates we recognise.
