Important hint

MAJOR TRAVEL DISRUPTION WARNING – RAIL CONSTRUCTION (July 11 – December 12, 2026)

Please do not overlook this: Extensive construction works are scheduled on the rail line between Munich Airport and Passau throughout this entire period. These disruptions severely impact train connections along this route, making them unreliable and subject to delays/cancellations.

  • Travellers are strongly advised against taking the train from Munich Airport to Passau during these dates.
  • The recommended alternative by rail is to fly into Vienna Airport (VIE) instead, which offers stable, direct train connections to Passau via Linz that are not affected by these works.
  • If you are arriving via Munich or Nuremberg, please also see the rental car recommendation in the "By car" section below.

By air

The nearest larger airports are Munich (München), Linz and Vienna, all of which offer rail connections to Passau. From the airport, take a train to Passau main station and then continue by foot (about 15 minutes), bus or taxi to the university campus.

Please take note of the major construction warning above – train travel from Munich Airport is heavily impacted until December 12, 2026.

By train

Passau is well connected to the German and Austrian rail network and can be reached directly from cities such as Munich, Regensburg, Linz and Vienna. From Passau main station (Passau Hbf), the university campus can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes by following the signs towards “Innenstadt/Universität” and walking along the River Inn.

However, due to the severe rail construction works mentioned above, the direct train link from Munich is unreliable until December 12, 2026. Please check alternative routes or means of transport.

By car

Passau is accessible via the A3 motorway (Regensburg–Passau–Linz). Take the exit “Passau‑Mitte” and follow the signs towards “Zentrum” and then “Universität”. Given the major ongoing rail construction, the well‑developed motorway network (A9 and A3) offers a reliable, direct, and stress‑free alternative that gets you to Passau without depending on the disrupted train schedules.

Rental car recommendation (for travellers from the west/north):
If you are arriving from the following origins, we strongly recommend renting a car, as these routes connect seamlessly to the motorways and avoid the rail disruptions entirely:

  • Munich Airport
  • Munich city (approaching from the west)
  • Nuremberg city (Nürnberg) (approaching from the north)

Visa

For short conference stays at a German university, foreign researchers usually come as short‑term business visitors or guest scientists; the concrete requirements depend mainly on nationality, length of stay, funding and whether any work beyond mere conference participation is planned. US citizens may enter Germany visa‑free for short‑term business and tourism for up to 90 days in any 180‑day period, and may attend conferences or academic meetings in that framework; they do not need a C‑visa solely to attend a conference.
