Just in the past year, six films from Kazakhstan have conquered the international film festival circuit. They were all by female filmmakers, all debutantes. Sharipa Urazbayeva is the only exception: Tyl is her third film, after Mariam (premiered in Locarno) and Red Pomegranate (premiered in Karlovy Vary).

The young Ayaulym lives in a boarding school, where she is mobbed by her peers. When they all go home for the New Year break, Ayaulym must stay. But suddenly her father dies, and her mother picks her up and takes her home. But the widowed woman and her daughter have inherited nothing but debts...
